Stem Zero x Kano Computing (2023)
A music player dedicated to young people. It emulates the physical experiences of Vinyl music using specialised triggers.
Insights :
Young people have limited access to physical music products, due to the time, knowledge and money it takes to be involved with them.
Question :
How can you make a device that eliminates these barriers for young people?
Goal :
Create a compact, cheaper and more intuitive device to emulate analogue music.
Process :
I researched how you interact with analogue music technologies.
I then broke down these interactions into the distinctive experiences that users have. I then thought about these motions and sketch-modelled these interactions into new typologies.
After creating my sketch models, I combined these new typologies and created new objects that brought them together. After experimenting with different combinations, I worked through sketching, sketch modelling and CAD modelling to find the best options.
It was my first time doing any kind of physical computing. I taught myself how to solder, code and create midi instruments from scratch throughout this project. I took the code from a basic x and y reader to use a ball to scroll music effects.
