How to Hack Your Hoover (2022)
A series of 3D printed components to alter the use of a typical Hoover. Creating a lamp, stool and rail.
Inspiring consumers to repurpose objects in their everyday lives.
Insights :
Users have a lack of autonomy in their products, all having one set purpose.
Question :
How can you change a product's use to improve its value?
Goal :
Create something to alter the purpose of an iconic product to bring greater value and use.
Process :
I first looked into how I could defamiliarise myself with the most typical objects around me. Sketching ideas for use-altering attachments to flip the purpose of objects.
After exploring and sketching these ideas, I decided on using the basic vacuum cleaner, as its design language and form lent itself well to being morphed.
Using a scale model of the iconic Henry Hoover and some plasticine, I began sketch modelling on how I could use the form of the Hoover to bend it into new functions. I wanted to make sure I would use every part of the hoover in this process to make it recognisable.
